How much does a carpenter cost in Nigeria?

Updated 24 October 2026 · By the Fixgent team

Short answer

Carpentry is mostly quoted per job. In 2026 a standalone two-door wardrobe costs about ₦130,000–₦300,000 and a built-in full-wall wardrobe ₦450,000–₦1.2 million. Kitchen cabinet labour is roughly ₦30,000 to ₦150,000+ per unit, and extras such as soft-close hinges and pull-outs add 20–50%. Lagos and Abuja are typically 20–30% above smaller cities.

What quotes often leave out

One wardrobe price guide warns that carpenter quotes often exclude items such as hinges, handles, rails, edge tape, transport and installation, which can add about 30% to the total. Ask for a full list of materials and hardware, and who supplies each.

Compare quotes properly

  • Same board type in every quote: plywood, MDF and HDF behave very differently in humid weather.
  • Same hardware: soft-close hinges and drawer runners cost more but last longer.
  • A drawing with dimensions, so you are comparing the same design.
  • Stage payments: materials, then completion, not everything upfront.

Small repairs

Fixing a sagging door, a broken drawer or a hinge is usually a short visit priced per job. Few sources list these prices, so describe the problem with photos and ask for a fixed price before the carpenter comes.

Questions people ask

Is MDF or plywood better for kitchen cabinets?

Plywood handles moisture better, which matters near sinks in humid weather; MDF is cheaper and smoother for painted finishes. Many carpenters mix them.

How long does a built-in wardrobe take?

Often one to three weeks from agreeing the design, depending on materials and the workshop's queue.

Should I buy the materials myself?

You can, but then the carpenter isn't responsible for material quality. If they buy, ask for receipts.
