Analogue HD or IP?

Analogue HD systems are cheaper and fine for a typical compound. IP cameras give clearer images, easier phone viewing and more features, but cost more and need a decent network. For most homes, four well-placed analogue HD cameras covering the gate, doors and parking are a sensible start.

What changes the price

  • Camera count and resolution. More cameras and higher resolution need more storage.
  • Cable runs. Long runs around a compound or through ceilings take more time and cable.
  • Storage. Ask how many days of recording the hard drive keeps.
  • Power. A small UPS keeps cameras recording during outages; budget for it.

Ask before you buy

  • Will I be able to view the cameras on my phone, and who sets that up?
  • Which brand and model are the cameras and recorder, and what warranty applies?
  • Will the installer change the default passwords and show me how to change them again?
