How much does generator servicing cost in Nigeria?

Updated 23 October 2026 · By the Fixgent team

Short answer

A minor service on a household generator (oil, plug, air filter, carburettor clean) is typically ₦15,000 to ₦40,000 in 2026, and a major service ₦40,000 to ₦100,000. An oil change alone is about ₦5,000 to ₦20,000 including the oil. In Lagos and Abuja, expect ₦2,000 to ₦8,000 just for a technician to come out and diagnose a fault.

Petrol or diesel makes a difference

Small petrol sets are cheaper to service but need it more often, roughly every 100 hours of running. Diesel generators cost more per service but go longer between them. One 2026 guide puts annual servicing for a large (30kVA) set at about ₦40,000–₦80,000 for petrol-type engines and ₦80,000–₦150,000 for diesel.

What changes the price

  • Engine size. More oil, bigger filters and longer work.
  • Genuine or copy parts. Copy plugs and filters are cheaper but can fail quickly; ask which you are getting.
  • Fault finding. A clear job (oil, plug) is priced up front; a set that won't start or has no output needs diagnosis first.
  • Fuel quality. Bad petrol is a frequent cause of carburettor problems. With pump prices around ₦1,100–₦1,500 per litre in 2026, a well-tuned engine also saves fuel.

Keep the next bill smaller

  • Change the oil on schedule, not when the set starts smoking.
  • Run the generator for a few minutes weekly if it sits unused, so the carburettor doesn't gum up.
  • Turn off heavy appliances before switching the generator off and on.
  • Ask the technician to note the hours or date of the service so you know when the next one is due.

Questions people ask

How often should I service my generator?

For a household petrol set, roughly every 100 running hours or every one to two months with daily use. Diesel sets can go longer; follow the manual.

Why does my generator start but give no light?

Common causes are a faulty AVR, brushes or a loose connection. It needs a diagnosis; the AVR alone can cost ₦15,000–₦60,000.

Should I pay for parts before the technician comes?

It is safer to agree the price after the fault is found, and to pay through a platform that holds the money until the job is done.
